Note
Vessels made in semiprecious stone were very much sought after in the Hellenistic and Roman worlds as symbols of wealth and opulence. They were used as diplomatic gifts or treasured as heirlooms. In fact many of them were found in royal tombs or imperial collections, both in antiquity and later. Their rarity also encouraged imitations in both glass and pottery.
